This tutorial is of course intended for WordPress users who are new to learning to use WordPress, the verandalounge blog has actually discussed a much more in-depth tutorial about WordPress, but it turns out that there are basic tutorials that haven’t been discussed here. This tutorial was created because of the frequent visitors verandalounge who are still just learning and asking how to install plugins, and why there is no plugin menu on their WordPress dashboard.
To answer this question, here I will make a complete guide. You need to know that after installing WordPress, the first thing any beginner who is just learning needs to do is how to install a WordPress plugin. This tutorial is of course very important because plugins allow you to add new features to WordPress such as adding galleries, slideshows, etc. so that your WordPress site becomes more powerful. There are thousands of free and paid plugins available for WordPress.
Before starting you need to know that if you are using WordPress.com or free WordPress, then you cannot install plugins. I often get complaints from users asking why they can’t see the plugins menu on their WordPress dashboard. This is because you are using WordPress.com, which has limitations.
To use the plugin, you need to use self-hosted WordPress (See difference between self hosted WordPress vs WordPress.com).
If you want to switch from WordPress.com to hosted WordPress, please read my tutorial on Steps to import and export WordPress.
Guide on how to install a complete WordPress plugin
In installing a WordPress plugin, I will describe it in full using 3 methods. namely the search method or search via the WordPress admin, uploading the WordPress plugin from the WordPress admin, and installing the plugin using FTP. Read on How to Use FileZilla FTP Client.
1. Installing a Plugin using the WordPress Plugin Search
The first method that I will discuss here is the easiest way to install a WordPress plugin, because you only use Plugin search. But this method only applies if you want to install a free plugin from the WordPress plugins directory.
The trick, please login to your WordPress admin and enter the menu Plugins »Add New.
You will see a page like the one in the image above. Search for a plugin by typing the name of the plugin or function you want to search for, as in the example above I will install the All in One SEO plugin, then in the search field I type All in one SEO. After that, you will see a group of listings like the example below:
You can choose the best plugin for you. Because in the search results that are displayed there are names that are almost similar and you have to see the rating and the number of people who use the plugin, if you are sure of the plugin then click the ‘buttonInstall Now‘.
WordPress will now download and install the plugin on your site. Please wait a few moments until you see a success message with a link to activate the plugin or return to the Plugin installer.
A WordPress plugin can be installed on your site, but it won’t work if you don’t activate it. So click the link “Activate PluginTo activate the plugin on your WordPress site. Now you have successfully installed your first WordPress plugin.
The next step is to configure the plugin settings. Each plugin that you install will be different, there are plugins that have a settings menu and there are also plugins that once activated work immediately without needing to be configured.
2. Installing a WordPress Plugin with Upload in Admin
If you choose to use this method, you must first download the plugin through the WordPress plugins directory or if you want to install a paid plugin or a premium plugin such as. Since many paid plugin and plugin developers are not listed in the WordPress plugin directory, WordPress has an Upload method to install these plugins. I will show you how to install a WordPress plugin using the upload option in the admin area.
First you need to download the plugin from the source (the file is in zip format). Next, please enter the WordPress admin area and enter the menu Plugins »Add New.
After that, click the button Upload Plugin at the top of the plugins list page on your WordPRess dashboard.
This will take you to the Plugin upload page. Here you need to click a button Browse and select the plugin file that you downloaded onto your computer.
After you select the plugin file, you need to click on the button “Install Now“. And wait a few moments for the plugin installation process to finish. WordPress will now upload the plugin file from your computer and install it for you. You will see a success message like this after the installation is complete.
Once installed, you must click the link “Activate PluginTo start using the plugin. As I explained above, you can immediately configure the plugin if there is one.
3. Installing a WordPress plugin using FTP
For this third method, it is a little more complicated than the two methods above, you can use this method if the provider WordPress hosting service You may have file limitations that could limit your ability to install plugins from the WordPress admin area.
If you are in this situation, you can manually install the plugin using FTP.
First you need to download the file from the plugin’s source (the file is in zip format). Next, you need to extract the zip file on your computer.
Extracting the plugin zip file will create a new folder with the same name as the plugin. This is the folder you need to manually upload to your website using the FTP Client.
In order to upload it you have to access your host via an FTP client. If you don’t have an FTP username and password, you can create your own via the cPanel hosting you are using or you can contact the support section of the hosting provider and ask them to create an FTP username and password.
Open the FTP client on your computer and connect to your website using the login provided by web hosting You. Once connected, you need to access a directory or folder / wp-content / plugins /
Next, upload the extracted folder from the zip file to the folder / wp-content / plugins / to your web hosting server. You can right click on the plugins folder and select “Upload” or you can drag and drop it into the window on the right.
After the file upload is complete, you will need to enter the WordPress admin area and click on the Plugins link in the admin menu. You will see your plugin successfully installed on the plugins list page. And you need to activate the plugin by clicking the link “Activate Plugin“.
