WordPress 3.9 Beta 1 has been released. This is the first release, developed under developt’s plugin-as-features model. In this article, I am posting what are the new features in WordPress 3.9 with screenshots. WordPress 3.9 is still in beta, so some of these features may not be available in the final release.
You can beta test on your computer by using the WordPress Beta Tester plugin.
Live Widget Previews in the Theme Customizer
With WordPress 3.9, You will be able to see a live preview of the widget in the theme customizer. The Widget Customizer will allow you to edit widgets, rearrange them, and even add new widgets.
The interesting part of wordpress 3.9 beta is that you can see all of this happening in the live preview window on the same screen. In previous versions of WordPress, users were able to edit theme features from the Customize screen except widgets. Now with this feature, the theme customizer looks complete and much more powerful. But to set the widget on appearance-> widget also still there.
To try this feature, you can install and activate Widget Customizer plugin. After activation simply go to Appearance »Customize, where you will see the Widgets section for each of the widget ready areas and sidebars supported by your theme.
Audio / Video Playlists
With WordPress 3.9, users will be able to create audio / video playlists. Audio / video playlists will work as shortcodes like photo galleries. You will be able to upload multiple audio / video files and add them as a playlist straight from WordPress Media uploader.
WordPress will also try to get album cover and media information by using ID3 tags, but this will fall under the theme feature. This will be a very useful feature for WordPress Themes for bands and musicians.
Updates on TinyMCE
Editor The visuals in WordPress are based on TinyMCE editor which is another open source software. TinyMCE recently released a major update to the software, so in this case the WordPress release TinyMCE will be updated. This update resulted in many improvements to the Visual Editor. In fact, you can say that WordPress 3.9 is focused on improving the writing / editing experience in WordPress. Some of these fixes are:
You will be able to preview the live gallery in the visual editor. When you add a gallery to your post, the image will be displayed in a beautiful box right inside the post editor.
You can drag and drop images into the editor directly, and they will be automatically uploaded (this is pretty awesome).
Many more improvements were made when adding and editing images when writing posts. Like if you want to crop and edit pictures in solo writing, you don’t need to open another window for it. You can do this by clicking on the image and the size by dragging the little box in the corner.
Pasting text directly from Microsoft Word will not produce odd characters. You don’t have to hit the ‘paste from Word’ button anymore. It’s also a cool fix.
Changes to the appearance of the Add Theme
You’ll also see further improvements in the Previe Template. There will be a new, sleek and stylish UI to add new themes in WordPress. This takes a screenshot of the displayed theme. You can also click the tabs to switch between popular tags, filters and search for new themes from the official theme directory.
Here are some of the advantages of WordPress version 3.9 beta 1 which was released, hopefully the article above was useful and you will be more proud to use WordPress. 🙂
