And if you don’t have a windows DVD to reinstall, then there is a very easy and practical way to have a windows installation using a USB Flashdisk. So, it’s important to know which software you need and how to make a bootable Windows USB Flashdisk for the Windows version (7,8 or 10).
In this tutorial, I will show you how to get Windows 7, 8 and 10 ISO images (Legal and Free) and create a bootable USB Flashdisk to install Windows on your PC or laptop.
1. Create a Bootable Windows 7 USB Flashdisk
Windows 7 is the most used Microsoft Windows today, so it’s pretty clear that many people still want to know how to make a bootable USB Flashdisk for Windows 7. Although, Windows 7 is the most used version of Windows today, but Microsoft’s focus is still on Windows. 8 and 10 as representing the future of Windows. So Microsoft doesn’t offer an easy-to-download or boot USB creation tool for it.
However, it will still let you download the ISO image file separately, but only if you already have a Windows 7 product key, not for testing purposes. So getting a Windows 7 ISO is not a problem if you are already an owner and just want an ISO for future installations. Otherwise, you’ll have to install Windows 7 using a DVD disc, which you can borrow from a friend who owns it.
There is no official (legal) way except both to get a Windows 7 ISO image. You can download a Windows 7 ISO from Microsoft’s software download site here by providing a valid product key.
Microsoft also offers separate software for creating a bootable Windows 7 USB Flashdisk, which you can download from CodePlex.
Using Windows USB Download Tool
Now, that you have Windows 7 ISO file and Windows USB Download Tool, it is time to make Windows 7 bootable on USB Flashdisk. This software does not offer many customization options or very fast processing, but it is very easy to use. Anyone can easily use this software and create a bootable Windows 7 USB Flashdisk.
Plug the USB Flashdisk into your PC and make sure it has at least 4 GB of storage space. And make sure your flashdisk is empty because other data on the USB will be deleted during the process. Now, run the Windows USB Download Tool software and click “Browse“. Here, select the Windows 7 ISO that you have downloaded and click “Open“.
Now, all you need to do is click “Next“And select the USB Flashdisk you want to make Bootable Windows 7. After that, just start the process and you will have Bootable Windows 7 on your USB Flashdisk after the process ends. Easy right?
Create a Windows 7 Bootable USB Flashdisk with Rufus
Rufus is another great piece of software for making your USB flash drive bootable, but it is a bit complex, perfect for advanced users who need more control. To use this tool, the requirements are the same. You need a Windows 7 ISO file and a USB Flashdisk with at least 4 GB and no important data on it.
Download Rufus and run the software. Don’t get confused by all the options, they will automatically fill in according to the files and USB stick provided. Make sure the USB is attached and click the icon “Drive“Under the heading”Format Options“. Now select the Windows 7 ISO file and click “Open“.
If both a USB stick attached and an ISO file are provided, all configuration options should be automatically filled according to the requirements.
No need to make any arrangements. However, you may want to change the “File system” to “FAT32If your PC voted UEFI bios. Now, make sure the last three options are checked under the “Format Options” heading and click on “Start“. After that, the process will start. It will take a few minutes to complete the process, but it will be much faster than the above software.
2. Create a Bootable Windows 8 and Windows 10 USB Flashdisk
Windows 8 and Windows 10 are supported by Microsoft, so they offer ISO creation software for both Windows. This tool can download Windows as well as create a bootable USB flash drive which is bootable in the same process. You don’t need to provide a product key to be able to use Windows for reinstallation or testing purposes.
The process is exactly the same for Windows 8 and Windows 10, the only difference is the download link for the ISO file. So we will only review the process of downloading and creating a bootable Windows 10 USB drive, you can follow the same steps for Windows 8.
Make Windows 10 Bootable Using Rufus
1. First and foremost, download and install Rufus (free) and the file size is very small which is about 1 MB and does not require any installation. Just download and run. Initially, it will ask for your permission to run, so click “Yes“.
2. This is your standard Rufus interface. You don’t need to do any configuration. Just plug in your USB stick and Rufus will detect it. After that, click the button “SELECTAnd select the Windows 10 ISO.
3. Now, click the button “STARTAnd you’re done. In about 3-4 minutes, Rufus will create a Windows 10 Bootable USB flash and then you can use it to live boot your PC.
If for some reason, you don’t like Rufus, you can use PowerISO (Free) as an alternative. It is very similar to Rufus and works really well. To create a bootable Windows 10 USB Flashdisk, open Tools and click “Create Bootable USB“.
Make Windows 10 Bootable with Media Creation Tool
Microsoft has developed the Media Creation Tool, a program to easily create a bootable Windows 10 USB stick. Although it doesn’t allow you to manually select an ISO file, this software will download the latest Windows 10 ISO image from Microsoft servers and create a bootable USB flash drive. Basically, it makes the process simpler and easier. So here’s how.
1. Download the Media Creation Tool from here and run.
2. After that, click the button “Accept” to continue.
3. Now, select the option “Create Installation Media“And click the” buttonNext“.
4. On the next page, it will choose to pre-configure your PC. If you want to change it, uncheck the suggested options and make changes. After that, click the button “Next“.
5. Here, select the option “USB flash drive“And click the” buttonNext“.
6. On the next page, it will detect your USB Flashdisk. If it doesn’t appear then remove your Flashdisk and plug it in again. After that, click the button “Next“.
7. Next, the software will start downloading the latest copy of Windows 10 and will create a bootable Windows 10 flash disk.
