WordPress has a nice feature called “Tags”, tags are a great way to organize or categorize your content, but many new users or newbies often make the mistake of equating tags like keywords for SEO, so they put tags in each post up to tens of tags. If you are managing a multi-user, multi-author blog or training new writers on your site, then you should limit the use of tags so that each author doesn’t over-put the tag on every post on your site. In this article, I will show you how you can set the maximum number of tags for each WordPress post.
Before we start, it is important that you understand the difference between categories vs tags. Because later this will be useful for you to understand how to use tags to improve the structure of your site.
How to limit the number of WordPress tags
To limit the number of tags in each WordPress post, the first thing you need to do is install and activate the plugin WP Limit Tags. After the plugin is activated, please enter the plugin’s settings menu Settings »WP Limit Tags to configure plugins.
On the settings page, you have to enter the maximum number of tags you want to limit each post. After that select the post type for which you want to enable this tag count restriction. After you have finished making the settings, then click on the Save changes button to store the settings.
Now please try to create a new post or edit an existing one, and enter a new tag, so in the tag box you now have a maximum limit.
For example, if you provide a maximum tag limit of 3, then after you add a third tag, this plugin will remove the add button. This limits you from adding a fourth tag. See the picture below.
I hope this article helped you in setting the maximum number of tags allowed for each post in WordPress, so as to control the excessive number of tags on each post. Hope it is useful. 🙂
