Web design is something that most people think about first when they want to get their site online. They may spend hours, days or even weeks figuring out the best placement of the logo, and what colors to use so that it matches between logo and its website. But also most people often forget about web design. Because maybe some of us often find there are lots of online sites that have bad web design features that make visitors lazy to visit the website again.
Many new bloggers have sprung up by creating sites without caring about web design, new bloggers tend to think about what to post, what articles will be made tomorrow, how to quickly make money, and promoting too much on social media. But they all forget how important web design is, that’s what makes many bloggers give up before getting success in this online world. Whereas having a web design that looks professional and sleek has a much bigger impact on people than you think about how to quickly make money.
In this article, I will present an article about 7 bad web design features that you should avoid.
1. Text Web
You might think that web design is all about graphics, colors, pixels, etc. but text is an important part of web design that is often overlooked. Text is a big part of your website, which is why it’s so important to be well presented on your site.
Some common examples of bad text on a website:
- Small text that is difficult to read
- Using a strange font (fonts that looks like handwritten) or something else
- Text that looks busy
- Text color contrast is difficult to read
- The text is underlined but it’s not a link
- Colored text but it’s not a link
- Paragraph in cap / bold / italic form.
If people find it difficult to read the content on your site then of course the visitor won’t last long. So always emphasize the use of clear and easy to read text on your website.
2. Poor Navigation
One thing that really annoys visitors is poor site navigation (menu). It is annoying when you want to try to find something on the site but can’t find it because:
- A little navigation
- Navigation is unclear
- Navigation too complicated
- Broken link
- Page / post title that does not match the content
- Endless scroll
- There is no search field
The whole point of creating content for your site is so that people can find that content on your site. If they can’t find it then visitors will go and find it elsewhere.
Take a few weeks (or more), review your site and see if you can find all the content and navigate the site easily, or you can get a friend or family member to test the site and see how easily they browse your website.
3. Overall Bad Design
There are certain web design features that may need to be fixed, but some site owners choose to ignore the problem. This not only annoys potential visitors to your site, but it can also lead to a drop in SEO optimization that you’ve done.
Some of these overall bad web design features include:
- Websites that don’t work (or have major problems) in certain browsers
- Websites that don’t work or appear incorrectly on mobile / tablet devices
- Excessive use of frames
- Side Scrolling
Internet access via mobile and tablet has grown very rapidly in recent years (and is expected to increase even further) so it is imperative that you make your site responsive or mobile friendly.
4. Website background
Some people like backgrounds and others really hate backgrounds. So you have to really think about when you decide to use a background on your site. So that it doesn’t make your visitors feel uncomfortable with the background that you install. Here are the things you should avoid using the background:
- Background that moves and distracts visitors from content
- The background is placed behind the text which makes it difficult / impossible to read
- Background with images that make you dizzy and want to vomit
The background can indeed be used as a great additional design to beautify your site if applied correctly. But if the background makes the content difficult to read and destroy web design on the whole, then you should avoid it.
5. Site Links
Every site has a link, but some sites choose to make these links difficult for their readers to see and follow. Of course, with invisible site links it is the same as giving us useless links to visitors.
Avoid these things related to the link:
- Dead and broken links
- Links are not easy to see due to low color contrast
- The link is the same color as your text,
- Undescriptive link
Make your links clear and easy for your visitors to find, this will certainly increase the pageviews of a site.
Images, if not used properly, can cause more problems than you might expect. The biggest factor is when people use images that are really large (both in terms of dimensions and file size) which causes your site to feel heavy to load.
- Large images that make websites slow
- Image that is larger than the user’s screen
- Image without Alt tag
- Images that do not match the content
There are many things you can do to help increase your web speed, by optimizing images before you put them on your website is a simple way to increase website speed.
7. The site looks like trash
If you don’t want to have a site that is called trash, then you should avoid the following when you want to create a good site:
- Excessive number of advertisements
- Ads are not neatly arranged
- There will always be a pop up or a new tab every click
- Page count counter
- Too many links on the sidebar
- The site has something flickering excessively
- Auto video / audio that starts when opening the page
If you bombard your visitors with too many things when they come to one of your pages, it can get really annoying and send them off right away. Remember that it’s your main content that gets people to your site, so don’t try to distract them by adding trashy features like the one above.
Above are some important points that make website design look bad, if your site has one of the ones I mentioned above, immediately remove it so as not to make visitors lazy to come back to your website. Because this will make your site look bad instead of making your site look attractive. Hopefully this article was useful and your site looks attractive with a good design. 🙂
